9 Proven Ways to Generate Sales Leads

Sales and marketing experts share their lead-generation tips, including the best methods and media for finding prospective customers.

CIO — When it comes to the best way (or ways) to generate sales leads, or find new customers, “there is a lot of buzz surrounding social media,” says Mick Hollison, the CMO at InsideSales.com, a provider of cloud-based sales automation and predictive analytics for inside sales professionals. Social media “is exciting and highly utilized.

However, our research found that social media platforms — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest — aren’t very effective at generating quality sales leads,” he says. “Meanwhile, some of the more effective methods, like executive events, webinars, search marketing and telemarketing, are underutilized.”

While trade shows and webinars work well for certain organizations, many businesses swear by LinkedIn and Facebook (despite InsideSales.com’s findings). Clearly, when it comes to lead generation, one method does not fit all.

So how do you determine which methods or media are the best for finding new customers? By testing several different lead generation strategies — and measuring the results.

marketing, sales, lead generation

To make this task a bit easier, we asked dozens of sales and marketing experts to find out which lead generation methods yielded the best results for themselves or their clients. Following are their top nine suggestions on where and how to find new customers.

1. Customer referrals. Dogs may be man’s best friend. And diamonds may be a girl’s best friend. But customer referrals are an organization’s best friend.

“There is nothing better than getting a sales lead from a happy customer,” says JR Rodrigues, CEO, NetCablesPlus, which sells a wide variety of networking cables and accessories. An existing “customer knows what you are offering and probably has a good idea of what the referred prospect needs,” he says.

“This means that the lead is probably well-qualified. Beyond this, you will have tremendous credibility with the prospect since you come well-recommended from someone that they know and trust,” Rodrigues says

2. SEO, SEM and PPC. “The best way (in terms of lowest cost per acquisition) for an IT company or a service-based B2B company to generate leads is through pay per click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO),” says Gabriel Shaoolian, the CEO and founder of digital agency Blue Fountain Media.

“PPC and SEO are the most effective way to generate leads because when companies need IT services, they go to Google and search for IT companies. (Something like 90 percent of consumers — business or otherwise — go to Google search first.),” Shaoolian says.

To increase the effectiveness of your search engine marketing (SEM) and PPC campaigns, use “long-tail keyword phrases, which are highly targeted search terms typically consisting of three words or more,” advises Brett Prince, president, Marketaire, a provider of social media and Internet marketing news.

“Long-tail keyword phrases drive targeted traffic due to their specificity, and they’re less competitive than related, shorter search terms, which tend to be higher in volume and more competitive,” Prince says.

SEO

In terms of SEO, “consider something educational, something your audience could benefit from,” says Prince. “Once you’ve identified your target keywords, create content around it. You may be amazed at how fast you will rank and start generating traffic and leads for this term.”

3. Cross-promotions and co-marketing. Consider forming “alliances with complementary, noncompetitive vendors to exchange leads, promote each others’ products and services, or any number of other mutually beneficial activities,” suggests Rodrigues.

“The leads generated from such activities can be quite good — sometimes almost the same quality as customer referrals,” he says. “The downside is that managing such alliances can be time-consuming and the lead flow can be unpredictable.”

4. Providing useful content. “According to Google, tech buyers consume an average of 14 pieces of online content before making a buying decision (as opposed to just eight to 10 for the typical buyer),” says Kathleen Booth, owner and CEO, Quintain Marketing, which provides small to midsized businesses with end-to-end marketing solutions. “Companies that produce educational or informative content can establish thought leadership and generate leads earlier in the buying process, setting the stage to ultimately win the business,” she notes. “It may sound counterintuitive,” she continues, “but the key is to avoid selling. By offering prospects helpful information in the form of blogs, whitepapers, ebooks, webinars, case studies or demos, you can win their trust and their business.”

5. Speaking at trade shows, conferences and industry events. “The best lead generator is to give an event presentation and follow it with customized letters, calls or emails to individuals that you met [there],” argues Susan Carol, CEO, Susan Carol Associates Public Relations.

Speaking at an event immediately gives you name — and face — recognition, literally separating (and hopefully elevating) you from the hundreds of other vendors or service providers trying to get noticed. And by following up with people you meet at shows in a timely fashion, you stay top of mind.

6. Using LinkedIn. “Our customer research showed that traffic from LinkedIn generated the highest visitor to lead conversion rate (2.74 percent), almost three times higher than Twitter (.69 percent) and Facebook (.77 percent),” says Mike Volpe, CMO of HubSpot, a provider of inbound marketing software. So what makes LinkedIn a good source of leads for IT companies and professional services organizations?

“First and foremost, LinkedIn has a high percentage of professionals, so the likelihood, especially for B2B marketers, that you’re dealing with people in your target audience is higher than some other channels,” he says. “Moreover, LinkedIn Groups are organized around the concerns and challenges faced by many buyers and/or their geographic location and profession, so LinkedIn makes it easy to view and contextualize what your potential buyers are talking about and tailor content on your LinkedIn Company pages accordingly.”

Just be careful not to lead with a hard sell. “Instead, focus on creating relevant content that is highly shareable and relevant to potential buyers,” says Volpe. “Infographics, quick tips and examples of success from executives in their industry are all great examples of how to interact on LinkedIn Groups to drive leads and inspire engagement.”

7. Using Twitter. Use Twitter “to promote sales, products or services… and utilize hashtags so that potential clients can find your sale or topic,” suggests Kimberly Judd-Pennie, the founder and CEO of CyberMark International, an integrated marketing firm.

Twitter

You can also use Twitter to find potential customers by tracking “buying signals,” notes You Mon Tsang, vice president of Products and acting CMO at Vocus, which provides cloud-based marketing and public relations software and services. For example, if you sell skis, search for individuals looking for ski recommendations by typing in relevant search terms (e.g., “skis recommendation”) or looking for the hashtag “#skis” or “#skiing.” Or create your own hashtag.

8. Providing contact information on every website page. “With search engines being such an important driver of inbound website traffic, you can’t always predict where people are going to enter your website,” notes Jonathan Bentz, marketing manager, Netrepid, a provider of professional services. “Having your contact info on every page of your website increases the likelihood that people will contact you.”

9. Live chat. “We added a live chat box to our website and generated a request for quote the very first night!” says Bentz. “I can’t stress how important that was for a proof of concept, especially since most IT pros are looking for fast answers without possibly getting stuck on the phone with a pushy sales person.”

How to Turn Your Blog Subscribers Into Business Leads

by Pamela Vaughan

With so much emphasis on quality content these days (and rightfully so!), it’s easy to forget about some of the other things that make an effective blog tick. But let me tell you — building a successful business blog isn’t just about creating content. And if that’s the only thing you’re focusing on, you’re definitely not using your blog to its fullest potential.

What I’m talking about here is blog optimization. Not in terms of search (although that’s important, too), but rather in terms of using your blog to move prospects through the marketing funnel.

So how do you optimize your blog for every stage in the marketing funnel? Well, we’ve already written posts about how to optimize for nurturing casual visitors into dedicated subscribers, and how to optimize for nurturing your current leads … but what about those inbetweeners? No, I’m not talking about the British sitcom. I’m talking about those people who are active subscribers, but not quite leads for your business yet. Well, those inbetweeners are exactly who we’re going to focus on today.

Let’s take a look at some effective, contextual ways to optimize your blog to nurture those subscribers into valuable business leads.

How to Nurture Your Blog Subscribers Into Business Leads

Warm Up to New Blog Subscribers With a Welcome Email

Don’t just start shoving lead conversion opportunities down your brand new subscribers throats right off the bat. Start warming up to your new subscribers with an automated welcome email. Use this email to show recipients how much you appreciate having them as subscribers, remind them what they signed up for, and let them know about any other action items.

For example, if you offer email frequency options (e.g. instant notifications vs. a daily, weekly, or monthly roundup), let subscribers know how they can change their preferences to suit their needs (more on this next). You can also encourage your subscribers to follow you in social media for additional content updates — a great way to increase your social reach. Finally, if you already have some personal information in your contacts database about your subscribers, use it to personalize the email.

(Note: HubSpot customers on the new COS can easily set up this automatic welcome email using Workflows.)

Provide Subscriber Frequency Options

If your blogging software enables you to offer various email frequency options, make sure your subscribers are aware of them! The fastest way to turn off some blog subscribers is by bombarding them with an email every single time you publish a new post. While instant post notifications may be the preference for some, others might prefer just one daily, weekly, or monthly email roundup of your recent content (all of which are options with HubSpot’s new Blog COS).

So let them know how to change their frequency preferences — and that they’re welcome to do so at any time. Create a special landing page for this very purpose, and link to it in your welcome emails as well as in the footer of your individual subscriber emails.

Segment Smart Calls-to-Action (CTAs) on Blog Posts by Lifecycle Stage

One of the most effective ways to optimize your blog for visitors in different lifecycle stages is through the use of dynamic CTAs (we call ’em Smart CTAs). With Smart CTAs, you can segment which offers get displayed to what site visitors in your blog CTAs, making for a much more relevant, contextual user experience. For blog visitors who aren’t yet leads, you’ll want to display very top-of-the-marketing-funnel, low commitment, educational offers — like ebooks, webinars, tip sheets, checklists, templates, etc. — since they’re just starting to get to know your business and what you offer.

Based on the Smart CTA segmentation above, this is the CTA you’d see if you weren’t yet a lead and you came to a blog post using this Smart CTA group:

default-cta-in-action-2

(Note: If you’re a HubSpot customer, you can segment by list rather than by lifecycle stage to achieve more granular segmentation.)

Use Other Blog Real Estate for Smart CTAs

Individual blog posts aren’t the only places for Smart CTAs on your blog. You can take advantage of other blog real estate, like the top and sidebar of your blog, to display Smart CTAs, too — like HubSpot Partner IMPACT Branding & Design does on its blog

Include Smart CTAs Within Subscriber Notification Emails

While we’re on the subject of Smart CTAs, how about your subscriber emails? If you have control over the design of these notification emails to your subscribers, you might consider including Smart CTAs in here as well. Just keep in mind that the main point of your notification emails is probably to drive subscribers back to your blog, and by including a CTA, you may end up sacrificing some blog traffic for traffic to your landing pages. Depending on the goals you have for your blog, this may or may not be a good tactic for you.

Create Marketing Offers to Align Closely With Blog Content, & Vice Versa

Another great way to amplify the lead generation effectiveness of your blog is to closely align your lead gen offer content with your blog content. By creating relevant marketing offers that complement your blog content, you’ll naturally transition your readers into a lead conversion opportunity. The opposite is true as well. If you have a new lead gen offer, brainstorm content ideas that can be used to promote your new offer.

Include Text-Based CTAs Within Blog Copy

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to call out your offers within the copy of your blog posts. Just make sure the offer is educational in nature and relevant to the content of your post. These text-based CTAs should be meant to provide additional, helpful resources to your readers. The bonus for you is, they also happen to convert visitors and subscribers into leads. 🙂

Questions and Answers

What is internet marketing in SEO?

Hi to all,
Can you please explain me about internet marketing in SEO.

Posted by Mohamed yasil
[display_name id=”1″]

Internet Marketing :- A concentrated marketing effort applied through the Internet. These include lead generation activities such as SEO and SEM, affiliate marketing, banner ads and emails. More importantly internet marketing also includes market analyses, benchmarking, performance measurement and customer relationship management.
Internet marketing, also referred to as i-marketing, web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

The importance of Internet marketing strategies has increased with the growth and importance of the Internet. Most established companies are vying online space today and seek to adopt web marketing strategies to increase traffic to their company's homepage. Internet marketing helps add potential customers and the number of quality leads to your website as well. In fact, most organizations can adopt Internet marketing and advertising strategies to generate better business.

Internet marketing tools can be used to find the hotspot of your website — the place that gets the most traffic. These tools can also help ensure a top ranking for your site or software programs to repair broken links.

Another way to increase your revenue via Internet marketing is to use keyword suggestion tools. Keyword research is a very important aspect of an Internet marketing campaign. If a site is not targeting the right keywords, in all probability it is losing potential customers. Low rankings, as a result of bad keywords, could translate to low earnings as well. A better approach is to find out what the popular keywords related to your product or service and analyze the search volumes for them. Many keyword research tools can be found online.

Internet marketing can be enhanced by enriching one's website. Great designs and content might better attract users to a particular website. Aesthetically please sites generally attract more visitors but so do functional sites. While a site should be visually pleasing and reach out to a broadly-defined demographic group, it should also be user-friendly.

Keeping an eye on the effectiveness of an Internet marketing strategy is also important. Internet marketing is not all about huge advertising costs and a successful website launch. The effectiveness of marketing tools will also have to be monitored to ensure that the approach continues to be fruitful. There are a number of site optimization and email marketing tools that are available today. Careful analysis and selection of internet marketing strategies will help ensure business success.

In which jobs or cases MBWA (management by walking around) is needed?

Can you tell me the different types of jobs which uses management by walking around.

Posted by Jason
[display_name id=”1″]

The web page (below) provides: Management by walking around: 6 tips to make it work
Management by walking around (or MBWA), as you probably know from your Internet search, is the habit of stopping by to talk with people face to face, get a sense of how they think things are going, and listen to whatever may be on their minds.

This was how founders Bill Hewlett and David Packard ran their eponymous computer company. After Tom Peters and Robert Waterman wrote about it in their 1982 blockbuster bestseller In Search of Excellence, MBWA became a buzzword for up-close-and-personal management. Steve Jobs was the ultimate practitioner of this approach, taking it beyond Apple (AAPL) employees to customers, whose complaints or comments he often answered with a phone call.

It may be that popping in on employees unexpectedly is, as you say, a distraction — but enthusiasts say the practice also yields real benefits."Management by walking around really helps you be more visible, connect with employees and share ideas, and invite suggestions for doing things better," says Annie Stevens, managing partner at Boston-based executive coaching firm ClearRock.

Beyond the obvious advantages of keeping your own finger on the pulse of the organization, employees are likely to be more engaged and productive if they see you and speak with you frequently than if they don't. That might sound commonsensical, Stevens notes, but email has replaced ordinary face-to-face contact in many workplaces, so that some bosses have come to seem as remote and inscrutable as Oz behind his curtain.

"There has been a tendency to manage employees via email, memos, and formal meetings," she says — partly because many managers feel (as you do) that they just don't have time to meet with employees informally, and partly because "younger and newly promoted managers" may never have learned the basics of MBWA.

So, for bosses who would like to manage by walking around (rather than, as one wag put it, manage by walking away), Stevens offers this checklist of suggestions for doing it right:

1. Make MBWA part of your routine. Dropping in on employees' workspaces for an informal chat is most effective if you don't do it on any fixed schedule, since "you'll realize the greatest returns by seeing what is going on when people aren't prepared for you," Stevens says. But do plan for a bit of MBWA on your own calendar every day, if you possibly can, even if it's only for half an hour: "The more often you do it, the more beneficial it is."

2. Don't bring an entourage. MBWA works best as a continual stream of one-on-one conversations with individual employees. Bringing aides or assistants with you will probably just inhibit the discussion by making people more self-conscious or, worse, make them feel you're ganging up on them.

3. Visit everybody. As anyone might guess who's familiar with how office rumor mills get spinning, dropping in on some folks more often than others is likely to create the wrong kind of buzz. Try to spend roughly the same amount of time — not necessarily all in the same day or even the same week, but over the long run — with each person who reports to you.

4. Ask for suggestions, and recognize good ideas. "Ask each employee for his or her thoughts about how to improve products, processes, sales, or service," Stevens says. Then, if someone's idea leads to a positive result, make it known whose suggestion it was and show you're ready to give credit where it's due.

5. Follow up with answers. If you can't answer an employee's question off the top of your head, don't forget to get back to him or her with an answer later, Stevens suggests. Besides being common courtesy, it builds trust.

6. Don't criticize. Remember, you're on a fact-finding mission, with the secondary purpose of building rapport. To avoid undermining those aims, Stevens says, "If you find that an employee isn't performing his or her job correctly, don't attempt to change the behavior on the spot. Instead, make a note of it and address the problem at another time and in another setting."

Clearly, MBWA takes some extra time and effort, but apart from any tangible payoff it might yield down the road, you might even find that you enjoy it. Stranger things have happened.

What is Internet Marketing?

I'm confused with these stuff, internet marketing, search engine optimization, social media optimization, etc.. Are they all related?

Internet marketing is the marketing of products and services using the Internet as its medium. Lower costs of dissemination of information and a global audience are its main advantages. Internet marketing also encompasses digital customer data management and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM), which are widely used in businesses today.

I'd suggest you download the ebook about internet marketing here:http://tinyurl.com/237cvqj .
It's a simple and straight-forward ebook with step-by-step instructions that can produce a lot of traffic, leads and income for you if you're willing to put in the small amount of time and effort to do it.

The truth of the matter is that the ebook is proven to be effective when it comes to internet marketing. So if your trying to build an online income without a powerful Marketing System you will always be climbing a slippery slope.
